However, what do you see in the game, if you attempt to westernize while bordering one? The reason the game gives you is that you don't border a western province (derp). You can westernize off trade companies only if you share a core. Sometimes it really is (AI is immune to stabhits while the player isn't for example, even in identical scenarios), and sometimes the in-game user interface does not accurately present the rules.

To be fair, the rules of the game are obscure enough that it's not fair to a player without tons of trial and error experience to chastise him for concluding the AI is cheating. Not like when you are able to, where it shows how much you are behind in tech. As my suspicion were, the tab showed me that I had to own a province or neighbour a western nation that has a core and is not a trade company. When I finished coring, I checked the tab again to westernize again though I were sure I was behind enough in tech so that it should have alerted me.
Now as mentioned, I checked any nations around it just to be sure I had missed something, but all Indian. The event is shown in message log which I hover over and has used political view to show the nations neighbouring and you can see Spain with Goa. Though they might have been behind in tech, the only western nation are Spain at Goa which is a trade company, the rest are Indians including me and they doesn´t even neighbouring Goa which would be a trading company, they do however have it as a core but that shouldn´t make them able to westernize when they don´t own it. Now normally I wouldn´t give this notice any credit but as the circumstances were and which can be seen on the attached pics, they should be no way near able to westernize at all. The moment peace was signed I got the notice that Bahmanis had started westernizing. However, as I advanced into dominating India from the remaining nations I conquered some provinces from Bahmanis and vassalized it in order to make use of the few cores and claim they had that weren´t on me. During my Ceylon achievement run, Spain had conquered Goa and cored it but as a trade company I can´t westernize from it until conquered, at which I´m not yet totally ready for though being ahead in military they outnumber me alone and have better ships than me and the thought of a prolonged war to take the province at the moment is not pleasing since India is riddled with nations that plot my downfall.
